I made rubbings from manhole covers and paving slabs using wax over lining paper, hung these across the walls of an empty apartment in Camberwell and drew my own lines in wax across the top. I then painted a horizontal band around the room using calligraphy ink. The effect reminded me of the literal meaning of photography: writing with light.
